Let me tell you a secret about a father's love...

To my husband on Father's Day,

I wish you knew how often it happens.  How often you'll walk out of a room and only a moment later, a friend will lean over to me and say it:

"He is such a great dad."

It's an almost weekly occurrence.  And I know why.
It's because you are such a great dad.

Most people say that being a mother comes naturally to us women.  That we're born to do it or something.  I think you know the truth - I was never a natural.  I had to grow into it.

Not you.  You were always a natural.  You have always known what to do.  What would make him calm, what would make him happy, what would make him giggle in that adorable way that makes both of our hearts burst.  You're not just a great dad.  You are simply the best dad.

Before our son was born, I remember watching this father and son walking into a grocery store.  They were wearing matching hats and holding hands.  The little boy on his set of short legs could barely keep up with the older man.  Something about this whole scene made my heart ache and long for the day I would watch you with our first child.

Today it happened.
I was walking behind the two of you as we walked in for our weekly grocery store.  You were wearing the matching ball caps I chose for you.  And our son looked up at you in such a way that just made me so proud.  I would have taken a picture, but instead I just watched and enjoyed the moment I've waited so long for.  If you would have looked back you would have seen a huge grin on my face as I watched the two of you.

I'm glad you didn't look back at me.
I'm glad you kept looking at him.
He loves you so much and just relishes in the attention you give him.

Our son is kind of a daddy's boy.  Sometimes it's hard for me to come to grips with that, but in truth - I'm okay with it.  I can't think of anyone better for him to grow up to be exactly like.

I didn't get you a card.  I forgot (again.)
I know you don't care if people make a big deal out of this holiday, or your birthday, or really any other thing that you do well.  I've told you before that I will never not need to hear people me they're proud of me.  You said you don't need to hear it at all.

If I had bought a card, I would want it to say this:
You're a great dad.  I am so proud to call you my husband and the father of my son.  I love you.

Happy Father's Day.
